Liz spent over 500 hours completing this extremely detailed painting! The featured magnolia tree Magnolia Campbellii “Charles Raffill” was planted in the quadrangle behind The Clocktower in 1965 by Dr Geoff Baylis, Head of the Department of Botany from 1945 to 1979, and is now dedicated to his memory. The tree flowered for the first time in 1978 and every year since 1995 staff from the Geology department have recorded the date of the first bloom, dubbing that day “Magnolia Day”!
