2022 Studio Sale!

Thanks for coming to my Studio Sale!

I’ve been working as a fulltime artist based mostly in Ōtepoti for nearly 4 decades now – how time flies!

Over the last 15 years I have been working with Sandie here at Koru – she is a fantastic supporter of us artists and I am very grateful she is able to host my studio sale this year! Thanks also to all of you who support our businesses :)

The paintings and drawings you see before you are many and varied and span 16 years around Ōtepoti, particularly Blueskin Bay and Dunedin City.

The oldest paintings are the large ones hung up high – they are what remain from my solo show "Fanny and Me" at the Hocken in 2006. The style I was using – monochromatic oil stick – is echoed 14 years later in the North East Valley Lockdown paintings hung below.

Over the years I have developed a revolving set of styles and mediums and the subject matter is always arising from and reflecting my changing situation.

The pencil sketches were inspired by a visit to David Hockney’s big show in Melbourne in 2017 – his constant drawing even at age 80 got me sketching what was on the table in front of me at that time!

The black and white drawings were executed on a stable table in front of the TV during lockdown in 2020. I worked from photos I took on late night walks and each drawing took one or two episodes to complete!

The pastel tree rounds were quick sketches I did to jot down some ongoing ideas around trees – 6 of them also feature in my 2023 Moon Calendar of trees available here.

I'd also like to mention my woodcut prints! I began these back in 1984 when I was a fine arts student at Otago Polytechnic as a way of supporting myself and I have been making them ever since for the same reason!

Initially just 6 designs on handmade recycled paper they evolved into 20+ designs handprinted and handpainted on harakeke paper in 20 galleries around Aotearoa. The patches and flags were very popular in the days when Rudie and I began the Seacliff Market. After making thousands of prints I stopped my handmade production 2 years ago  so what you see here is all that is left!

The Fine Art Giclée Prints are a new venture for me and I hope you enjoy the opportunity to purchase some of my larger images in a more accessible way – they also post really easily around the world!
